• ASX 200 closed higher on Middle East fallout
  • Oil and gold stocks spiked on concerns the war could spread regionally
  • US dollar climbed, while bond prices tumbled

The ASX rose +0.2% on Monday, driven mainly by a 3% surge in the Energy sector.

Oil and coal stocks rose broadly following the breakout of Israel’s war with Hamas over the weekend. At the time of writing, the benchmark Brent is trading at US$87.57 a barrel, which is up almost 4% vs Friday’s close.

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman told CNBC that OPEC+ will “remain cautious” on any moves to expand or cut its oil outputs as the fighting continues.

Gold stocks also climbed as the clash raised the potential for a wider regional conflict, which boosted demand for safe haven bullions. This came as President Biden pledged “rock solid” US support for Israel.

The US dollar has also climbed amid the latest turmoil, with the AUD now skidding to 63.54c.

But with the US markets closed tonight for Columbus Day, Wall Street will have to wait until Tuesday to gauge the reaction of US traders.

Elsewhere, Chinese stocks also fell as traders returned from a week’s long national holiday. Property woes remain a top concern, but Chinese retail sales data from the holiday period have disappointed.
