Blast from the Past: How have last year’s IPOs performed this year?
IPO Watch
IPO Watch
Last year’s class of ASX IPOs was only half the size of 2021 but was and still is better performing than this year, even though the list of top winners has changed somewhat.
2020 actually began as an average year with just 12 IPOs. When COVID-19 struck there was a drought of listings for several weeks but things picked back up towards the back end of the year.
In 2020 there were 66 ASX listings and the average gain was 42%.
The top two stocks were asset management software company COSOL (ASX:COS) and medtech stock 4DMedical (ASX:4DX). A dozen were up 100% or better.
Here’s how 2020’s ASX IPOs performed up to the end of 2020 (data excludes reverse takeovers):

Taking the top spot was high-end fashion ecommerce outlet Cettire (ASX:CTT) which listed at 50 cents and now sits at over $3.
Second is Caspin Resources (ASX:CPN), one of a dozen or so stocks hoping to find a Julimar-like Ni-Cu-PGE discovery.
While it is early days in Caspin’s hunt, one thing in its favour which other Julimar hunters lack is having Chalice Mining (ASX:CHN) as a shareholder.
Third is Aussie Broadband (ASX:ABB) which rose from $1 a share to just over $2 in the back end of last year but now sits over $5 as it continued to grow its subscriber base.
Other “late bloomers” include Maas Group (ASX:MGH) which is up 162% and Pan Asia Metals (ASX:PAM) which after treading water for several months has nearly tripled.
Pan Asia took off after it announced the acquisition of a geothermal lithium project in (very) late August.
Unfortunately, others had positive starts to listed life and lost ground.
The most pertinent example was Nuix (ASX:NXL) which at one stage was more than double its IPO price.
But today it is little over half of that after earnings downgrades, allegations of inflated forecasts and consequential executive departures.
Another one of the “worst” has also been the only one to be a takeover target in Youfoodz (ASX:YFZ).
After listing at $1.50 and shedding over 60% of its value, it got a takeover offer from HelloFresh which the board was quick to embrace.
Cleanspace (ASX:CSX), a company that makes respiratory protective equipment, never recovered from one particular downgrade in March which it blamed on COVID-19 in North America.
Also failing to fire is Kiwi BNPL company Laybuy (ASX:LBY) which despite growing its users and merchants, remains behind its larger competitors.
