Special Reports: ReNerve has announced positive results from a nerve-repair comparative study showing patients who had peripheral nerve surgery using NervAlign had significantly lower post-surgery measures of pain to those where the Nerve Cuff was not used.
ReNerve (ASX:RNV) said the study, which is being presented this week at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons annual conference in Arizona, examined the use of its proprietary NervAlign Nerve Cuff in foot and ankle peripheral nerve-repair surgeries.
The study used two end points, with the first being an independent pain score assessment using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) methodology, which was measured pre- and post-surgery.
The second endpoint was whether the patient would elect to have the procedure again following the surgery and their recovery period.
ReNerve’s NervAlign Nerve Cuff protects and regenerates nerves during the healing process following peripheral nerve injuries or nerve repair surgery.
The Company said the product was unique, not only protecting the nerve while healing but naturally absorbing within six months.
For patients and surgeons, this means there’s no lasting foreign body at the site of repair to create potential complications.

ReNerve said 13 patients (14 feet) were treated with the NervAlign Nerve Cuff and 10 without, with the study consisting of 21 females and two males with an average patient age of 53.
The follow-up was two to 26 months post-surgery with average follow-up time of 9.25 months.
Included criteria was foot or ankle pain that could be improved with peripheral nerve surgery (PNS), while patients with previous history of PNS in the same extremity were excluded.
ReNerve said patients who underwent surgery with the NervAlign Nerve Cuff experienced a significant decrease in post-surgery pain compared to those who did not use the Nerve Cuff.
The pain score rating used in the study followed a standard pain score – zero equalling no pain to five being moderately strong pain and 10 equivalent to the worst pain possible.
ReNerve said using post-operative pain scores as a clinical marker was particularly useful in the study on foot and ankle surgeries, which endure significant movement and bear overall body weight, unlike upper limbs.
As a result, ReNerve said nerve pain in these regions of the body is closely linked to the condition of the nerve, extent of nerve damage and recovery process.
In a further endorsement of the NervAlign technology, patient satisfaction following their surgery was more likely to be higher in the group who were treated with the Nerve Cuff.
ReNerve said 93% of patients treated with the Nerve Cuff indicated they would have the procedure again, versus 70% of patients who did not receive the Nerve Cuff.
ReNerve CEO, Dr Julian Chick, said the results demonstrate that the NervAlign Nerve Cuff helped reduce post-surgery pain and led to better patient outcomes.
“These are very significant results for the development of ReNerve’s products, as they highlight the utility of the NervAlign Nerve Cuff in reducing patients’ pain following peripheral nerve surgery,” he said.
“The results clearly demonstrate the patient benefits that follow from the proper repair and regeneration of a nerve that is returned to normal function post-surgery.”
Dr Chick said the Nerve Cuff ensured that the nerves were protected during the initial post-operative recovery and regeneration period.
“Thereafter, because the Nerve Cuff is absorbed naturally after six months, there is no longer a lasting foreign body at the site of repair to create potential complications for the patient,” he said.
