Weekly ASX small cap wrap: who flew and who failed

ASX Small Cap Winners Jul 20-27

Cape Range (ASX:CAG) is one of the ASX’s best performing small caps at the moment.

But it doesn’t know why.

This week the buiness software maker (ASX:CAG) topped our list of the best performing floats of the past year.

After doing nothing since its November debut at 20c, the stock suddenly took off at the start of the month — topping our IPO list with a 475 per cent jump to $1.15.

That was Tuesday.

By Friday the stock was $1.61 — a gain of 155 per cent for the week.

It’s now up 570 per cent for the month.

Why? Cape Range told the ASX on Monday it has no idea.

Aerial photographer Spookfish (ASX:SFI) gained 44 per cent this week after announcing a $122 million takeover offer from its US-based shareholder EagleView Technologies.

The shares jumped up quickly to 7.5c — just below the 8c takeover price.

Spookfish has traded between 3.6c and 9.8c over the past year, but had lost close to 45 per cent before the takeover announcement.

Spookfish listed on the ASX in 2015, raising $5 million at an issue price of 3.5c.

EagleView already has a 10 per cent stake in the business and worked with Spookfish on developing its aerial photography products for the US.

Sewer fixer Calix (ASX:CXL) has made its mark as one of the best floats of the year so far.

Calix — which has developed a process to managing wastewater and its bad smells — spiked 36 per cent in its ASX debut last week. It raised $8 million in an IPO priced at 53c.

This week the stock put on another 51 per cent to close Friday at 95c.

Memory chip maker 4DS Memory (ASX:4DS) put on 57 per cent this week after telling investors development of its 300mm wafer technology was “progressing as planned”.

The first chips are on track for testing in late September.

The group has also appointed a New York “boutique investment bank” with a strategy to broaden its shareholder base. Plans for a US roadshow are underway for next month.

Infant formula stock Wattle Health (ASX:WHA) gained 51 per cent after winning approval to sell its “Pure Australian Grass Fed Milk Powder” in China.

The approval would “increase our brand awareness in the highly lucrative Chinese market and generate additional sales across WHA’s extensive distribution network in China.

“This will also assist in sales of WHA’s infant formula range in China, once WHA obtains State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR, formerly known as CFDA) accreditation.”
