The book, published by Precedent Productions, celebrates the stories of more than 100 small business owners from across Australia. From cafés and corner stores to trades and creative arts, these stories capture the grit, resilience, and community spirit that keep the economy moving. At its heart, Champions is also a tribute to Loe, who started his own journey stacking shelves in his family’s store in Enfield before dedicating more than four decades to recognising and honouring small business achievement.

What began as a sponsorship tool quickly grew into a three-year passion project, resulting in a 403-page keepsake packed with stories that inspire, entertain, and move readers. Much of the book’s energy is drawn from the Australian Small Business Champion Awards, which Loe calls the “Oscars for small business.” Since 1999, the awards have grown into a national celebration across more than 100 categories, providing small business owners with confidence, recognition, and often life-changing opportunities.

In this conversation, Matthew and Steve share how the book came together, why small business is “the beating heart of Australia,” and the unforgettable behind-the-scenes stories from more than two decades of awards nights. It’s a powerful reminder of why celebrating small businesses matters now more than ever.
