Cryptocurrency markets enjoyed a volatile 2021. Total market cap passed $3trn in November when Bitcoin and ether hit their highs, before settling back towards $2.5trn in December. Cryptocurrencies remain at a fraction of the value of other asset classes such as gold, stocks and treasury bonds. Here’s an essential peek at Capital.com’s 10 key trends for 2022.

Meanwhile…  prominent cryptocurrencies were lower on Tuesday after spending most of the Christmas weekend and Monday in positive territory. By US markets’ close, bitcoin was down 6.41%, Ethereum was off by 5.94%, while Litecoin was lower by 7.75%.

US crypto market mid-day: Falls as transaction costs rise

Many of the largest cryptocurrency assets by market capitalisation were down more than 5% early Tuesday in US trading as rising transaction costs continued to eat away at mining profits.

Around midday EST (UTC-5), Bitcoin fell to $48,650 per unit. Ethereal was trading more than 8% below its pre-Christmas rally at $3,816 per unit, while other popular assets such as Polkadot and Shiba Inu were down by more than 10%.
