The price of parking could skyrocket if a proposed merger between the two largest players in the parking and payment industry, Orikan and Duncan Solutions, goes ahead. Together, these companies operate the majority of parking meters nationwide, and their union could lead to the creation of a parking monopoly. Industry experts warn this could strip away competitive checks and balances, leaving the Australian driving public vulnerable to unchecked price hikes and diminishing service standards.
The ACCC will make a final determination on the proposed merger in 2025 but has already expressed concerns about the possible tie-up. “We are concerned that the proposed acquisition would substantially lessen competition in the market for end to end on-street parking solutions as Duncan is the primary competitor to Orikan,” ACCC Commissioner Dr Philip Williams said.
In this episode, Mr Hill talks about the profound implications of the merger on everyday motorists, how parking meters have evolved, and the future of parking fees and technology in Australia.
