Ben Lucas knows marathons. The Flow Athletic co-founder and Sydney Marathon head coach is about to run his 50th. Here, he shares seven unforgettable races every runner should have on their bucket list.
If you’re a runner, you know that some races go beyond the course. They become memories etched into your body and soul.
Each of these runs offers something unforgettable, whether you’re in it for the challenge, the scenery or the sense of connection.
They are more than just kilometres to rack up; they’re about community, kinship and discovering new parts of yourself.
So lace up, pick your race and make it one to tick off your bucket list.
Here are seven bucket-list races every runner should experience at least once…
#1. London Marathon (UK)
London is electric. From the moment you lace up, the energy is relentless.
Crowds line the streets, cheering like you’re winning the Olympics, and the landmarks – Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace – make every step iconic.
But what really hits you is the unity. You’re running through one of the world’s busiest cities, yet somehow it becomes a space for resilience, human spirit and connection.
It’s no wonder this is one of the world’s most coveted marathons.
#2. BOLDERBoulder 10K (USA)
Held annually in late May in Boulder, Colorado, this isn’t just a run – it’s a celebration.
Over 50,000 runners hit the streets for one of the biggest and most spirited 10km races in the world.
The energy is unmatched: live bands on almost every corner, belly dancers, slip and slides, and locals handing out bacon (yes, really).
You finish inside the University of Colorado football stadium to a roaring crowd – the atmosphere is electric.
The altitude adds a bit of a challenge, but this race proves you don’t need a marathon to feel like a champion.
#3. The Great Wall Marathon (China)
Ready for a challenge? This one is next level.
Running on the Great Wall of China – literally on it – with thousands of uneven stairs, steep climbs and intense heat will push you to your limits.
But it’s also one of the most awe-inspiring courses on earth. Ancient stone paths, sweeping mountain views and a deep sense of history surround you.
This is a race where you’ll dig deep mentally and come out transformed; it’s not so much about your time but about your experience.
#4. Real Insurance Harbour 10 (Australia)
Let’s bring it home. This Sydney-based 5-10km race is criminally underrated.
Designed by run clubs for runners, it’s fast, it’s scenic, and it’s got a community vibe that just hits differently.
You’re running past the harbour, alongside people from all walks of life, and it’s impossible not to get swept up in it all.
Whether you are prepping for the Sydney Marathon or just love a social and well-run event, this one is a must.
Get ready: It’s taking place on July 27, 2025.
#5. New York City Marathon (USA)
New York doesn’t do things halfway – and that includes its famous marathon.
All five boroughs come alive, with over 2 million spectators turning out to cheer on every runner.
You’ll cross bridges, climb hills, and feel like a rockstar from start to finish.
From the moment you enter Staten Island to your last stride in Central Park, the energy is goosebump-inducing.
If you ever doubted the power of community, this race will prove you wrong.
#6. Queenstown Marathon (New Zealand)
Think postcard-perfect views: snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lakes and autumnal trails. That’s the Queenstown Marathon.
Every step feels like a meditation, even when your legs are burning.
The course is mostly flat and fast, but it’s the natural beauty that steals the show – ideal if you are chasing a PB or just want to soak up nature while you run.
#7. Sydney Marathon (Australia)
Few things beat running across the Sydney Harbour Bridge at sunrise.
The Sydney Marathon gives you front-row access to the city’s most iconic spots – without traffic.
It’s one of the only major races that lets you take over the bridge, and that alone is worth the entry fee.
Add in a buzzing crowd, live music and a seaside finish, and it’s a race you’ll never forget.
