ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Is Australia’s own COVID-19 vaccine a winner?

COVID-19 vaccine trials around the world are making encouraging progress, helping to sustain our (some say unsustainable) market optimism.
In Australia, a leading early stage vaccine candidate is now shown to protect against virus replication and reduce lung inflammation in hamsters exposed to COVID-19.
It also looks like the University of Queensland-led vaccine can be manufactured at scale, project co-leader Associate Professor Keith Chappell said this morning.
“One of the big challenges in the development of vaccines is the ability to produce them at sufficient scale for widespread use,” Dr Chappell said.
“We are working with CSL to ensure the production yield is as efficient as possible and have every confidence they will be able to manufacture the millions of doses required to protect the Australian public.
“The phase-one study being conducted in Queensland is progressing well and assuming the study demonstrates adequate safety and immune responses, data should be available in time for CSL to commence the required large-scale efficacy study before the end of the year.”
On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ indexes hit fresh all-time highs as the US and China officials restated their commitment to the ‘Phase One’ trade deal.
Global oil prices touched five-month highs on Tuesday from a very low base.
Base metals were up, while booming gold and iron ore prices pulled back slightly.
The local bourse was down sharply in morning trade, with the benchmark ASX 200 index shedding over 1.2 per cent by 12pm AEST.
