The day ahead in data

The Reserve Bank of Australia today releases its quarterly monetary policy statement and the Australian Bureau of Statistics releases home loan data.

Globally, Chinese delegates are meeting with Trump in Washington, so watch out for continued volatility as a result of that.

At home, both the ASX200 and the ASX small ordinaries had modest gains on Thursday, after telco stocks experienced sharp falls on the back of the ACCC’s decision to block the proposed merger between Vodafone and TPG.

And with the federal election just nine days away, plenty hinges on whether Scott Morrison will manage to get through to another term by the skin of his teeth or Bill Shorten takes power.

Yesterday’s winners

Nex Metals Exploration (ASX:NME) was the day’s biggest winner, up 85 per cent to 2.4c, though it had no news out.

They were followed by Pure Alumina (ASX:PUA), also up 85 per cent, to 4.8c, after announcing sales growth of a company called Polar Sapphire, which it is acquiring.

The miner named after a song, Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR), keeps finding thick zones of high grade lithium outside the current resource at its Kathleen Valley lithium-tantalum project in WA, and that sent shares up 63 per cent to 8c at close.

Yesterday’s losers

Strangely enough, yesterday’s biggest winner Orthocell (ASX:OCC) was among the falls, closing down 21 per cent to 42c.

That was despite hitting as high as 78c earlier in the day, which represented a gain of more than 500 per cent on the company’s Tuesday closing price of 11.5c.
