Then Italy prevailed over England in the European Championship at Wembley, when things went haywire for the home team in the penalty shootout after the match finished in a 1-1 draw.
It marked the end of a strong run for the English side that included a rousing 2-0 win over fierce rivals Germany — after which England manager Gareth Southgate made a bizarre reference to World War II.
But in terms of British industriousness (and bravery), we can’t fault the heroic local fan who shoved a flare up his date pre-match (we hope he’s OK).

Gains this morning were led by tech minnow Inventis Ltd (ASX:IVT), which started the day with ~4m market cap and climbed above $8m after its shares almost doubled in morning trade.
Along with steady gains in full-year revenues, IVT flagged a pipeline of further work which saw investors send its shares to a multi-year high above 1c.
There was still plenty of activity in resources as three mining stocks made the winners’ list on market-moving announcements, while engineering firm WestStar Industrial (ASX:WSI) rose by ~20% after its subsidiary won a $10m contract to install piping at the Avertas Energy waste facility in Kwinana, Western Australia.
And in biotech, pharmaceutical wholesaler and retailer Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (ASX:API) got a takeover offer from Wesfarmers (ASX:WES).
