Altech has developed preliminary specifications for its CERENERGY® sodium-chloride solid state battery products to cater to the evolving needs of the renewable energy and grid storage market.

It comes amidst growing recognition that efficient and reliable energy storage solutions are required to balance energy supply and demand, ensure stable power delivery, and maximise the use of renewable energy sources.

Given the increasingly positive outlook for energy storage, Altech Batteries’ (ASX:ATC) preliminary specifications for its 60 kilowatt hour (KWh) and 1 megawatt hour (MWh) battery packs couldn’t be better timed.

The specifications allow Altech to initiate discussions with potential off-take partners and secure future sales in the growing grid storage battery market that could help capture the wastage of power on days when sunlight is abundant, which has been estimated at 2 billion euros ($3.2bn) annually in Germany alone.

Tapping into this global market is potentially very lucrative for the Company, as it is expected to grow from US$4.4bn ($6.52bn) in 2022 to US$15.1bn by 2027.

CERENERGY® packs for different applications

Altech’s CERENERGY® Sodium-Chloride Solid State (SCSS) batteries are an alternative to lithium-ion batteries in the grid storage market with advantages such as a long life of more than 15 years, safety, the ability to operate in extreme cold and desert climates, as well as using table salt instead of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt and graphite.

The 1MWh GridPack targets larger-scale applications, such as grid-level storage and industrial power backup. It is designed to provide battery backup and excellent performance in grid-tied commercial applications for an uninterrupted power supply.

The 1MWh GridPack has an operating voltage of 600 volts and current capacity of 100 amp.

The GridPacks have been engineered to ensure complete protection from both dust and any external environments, alleviating the need for any additional shelters or buildings.

They can also be constructed using a sea container design, which facilitates their easy transportation by sea or road to the installation site, as well as ensuring simple installation.

Unlike other mega battery packs, CERENERGY® GridPacks can also be stacked on top of each other, minimising their footprint while permitting easy scalability when coupled with the “plug and play” design.

They also require no moving parts such as cooling fans that are required for lithium-ion batteries, ensuring that GridPacks are maintenance-free and completely noise-free in operation, making them an ideal solution for remote and noise-sensitive environments.
