Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, manganese, magnesium, and vanadium.
Battery metals experts at Benchmark recently estimated that at least 384 new graphite, lithium, nickel, and cobalt mines are needed in the next 12 years to feed a 500% increase in global battery demand.
Last week, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) announced a 100GWh Gigafactory expansion in Nevada, which could see it become the largest Western producer of batteries.
Just look at these outrageous and impossible numbers from Benchmark, which emphasise just how metals-hungry these battery plants really are:
How much battery raw material will Tesla’s expanded 140GWh Gigafactory in Nevada consume each year?
A really good @benchmarkmin sketch of just how critical mineral hungry these super sized EV battery plants are.

Let’s break those stats down even further (don’t judge the questionable math).
Tesla’s manganese requirements equate to ~14% of annual global production in 2022, or 65% of projected annual volumes from Element 25’s (ASX:E25) Butcherbird project in the NT.
Cobalt consumption – at 11-15,000tpa – represents about four Broken Hill Projects, like that currently being progressed by Cobalt Blue (ASX:COB) in NSW.
COB plans to produce 3500tpa of cobalt over a forecast 17-year life of mine from 2025.
Lithium consumption (100-115,000tpa) is mammoth. That’s equivalent to more than two 50,000tpa Kachi projects, currently being advanced by Lake Resources (ASX:LKE), or one and a half of Liontown Resources’ (ASX:LTR) Kathleen Valley projects, once it hits full production of 700,000tpa spodumene concentrate.
(That assuming there’s ~8 tonnes of spodumene (SC6) per tonne of LiOH produced).
Benchmark is also estimating the enlarged factory will need up to 125,000t of nickel.
That’s one and half times the annual production of BHP’s (ASX:BHP) Nickel West division (80-90,000tpa) or eight Cassini-Northern operations (16,000tpa), currently being ramped up by $800m capped Mincor Resources (ASX:MCR) in WA.
And to meet its graphite anode needs of up to 170,000tpa, Tesla would require almost nine times Talga’s (ASX:TLG) 19,500t of annual production, which is expected from 2024.
‘Impossible!’, you say, and you’d probably be right.
“It seems to be a fairly widely accepted fact that without new production growth in the mining industry there won’t be much of an energy transition at all,” says Charlie Cryer, head of RFC Ambrian London in a recent note.
“Yet, if the message is that the decarbonisation agenda is getting whole-hearted support from wider society and that critical metals demand is indeed coming, it doesn’t seem yet to be translating into shareholder and management support for a strategic growth shift on (in) the ground.”
Many commentators have indicated that an extra US$100bn per annum of capex needs to be invested above the longer term run rate of ~US$80bn per annum, to ensure energy transition demand is fulfilled, Cryer says.
“On current projections that looks woefully over-optimistic.”

It looks like a bit of value discovery going on over at LML, which is up ~500% since relisting on the ASX earlier this month.
In 2022, LML received an unsolicited takeover offer from fellow South Australian project developer Quantum Graphite (ASX:QGL).
The initial all share offer (1 QGL share for every 40 LML Shares held) was rejected by the board and substantial shareholders in the company, but QGL recently extended its offer again for the third time.
The potential takeover target now has a market cap of $34m — well above QGL’s ~$6m valuation, even taking into account QGL’s substantial share price rise since October last year.
LML’s main game is the advanced Kookaburra Gully project in South Australia, which has a 3.88Mt resource grading 12.6% TGC for 489,360t of contained graphite.
The company is currently defining targets for drilling in 2023.
“The 2023 drilling program will be finalised over the coming weeks and high priority targets will be considered first for drilling, taking into consideration the logistics, planning and permitting lead times,” LML said 16 December.
The advanced project developer is embarking on a major resource expansion program at its flagship 1Mt Paradox lithium brines project in Utah.
The plan is to convert the existing inferred resource and exploration target in the Western area of the project to indicated and inferred resources.
The exploration target in the Western area is 2.10–2.56Bt of brine grading 108–200ppm lithium and 2,000–3,000ppm bromine.
Drilling is expected to start in the current quarter.
In September, the high-flying lithium project developer released its project definitive feasibility study (DFS).
The headline numbers for Phase 1 development are as follows:
ASN assumed a long-term price assumption of ~US$19,000 per tonne of battery grade lithium carbonate for the DFS.
At current lithium carbonate spot prices of above US$70,000 per tonne, pre-tax NPV and IRR jump to $5,149m and 98%, respectively.
That’s super profits territory.
