Infinity Lithium’s wholly-owned Spanish subsidiary Extremadura New Energies has joined major regional green hydrogen group SOI H2-ALEX.

SOI H2-ALEX is focused on the advancement of green hydrogen developments in the southwest Iberian Peninsula and specifically the Alentejo and Extremadura regions in Spain and Portugal.

This includes the advancement of an Iberian green hydrogen project and pipeline from Sines (Lisbon) in Portugal to Puertollano (Ciudad Real) in Spain, with a branch extended to Caceres.

Infinity Lithium (ASX:INF) is looking to use green hydrogen in its lithium conversion process instead of natural gas, which will reduce its carbon emissions.

As part of this drive, Infinity executed an MoU with global leading engineering firm thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG BU Mining in December last year to assess the potential to use green hydrogen to power the calciner at its San Jose lithium project in Spain.

Green hydrogen could also be used to power other energy applications on site.

An assessment is also underway for the supply of the gas from localised sources and potentially from the Iberian green hydrogen pipeline.

ENE Chief Executive Officer Ramon Jimenez said the use of green hydrogen, 100% use of renewable energy and incorporation of electric vehicles will allow the company to develop an environmentally and socially viable project.

“The carbon footprint makes this plant unique in Europe and meets the highest standards of sustainability,” he added.

San José lithium

Infinity’s San José projects hosts the second largest lithium bearing hard-rock resource of 111.2 million tonnes, containing more than 1.6Mt of lithium carbonate equivalent in the EU.

Development is expected to be through underground mining, which will reduce surface tailings and leave no material visible impact.

Spain’s Federal Government has voiced its support for the creation of a lithium-ion battery value chain in Extremadura while the Extremadura government has also said that the project would be a positive for the region.
