Mexico president Andres Manual Lopez Obrador has taken further steps towards nationalising lithium reserves after signing a decree at an event in Sonoro over the weekend, handing the responsibility over to the energy minister.
This move comes after Obrador introduced fast-track legislation in April last year, which basically states that lithium exploration, exploitation, and use will be reserved for a new state-owned entity, thereby halting concessions or permits for lithium projects.
The decree orders the energy ministry to carry out the nationalisation process and, in this instance, it has also declared around 907 hectares in Sonora – one of Mexico’s 31 states – as a mining zone.
“What we are doing is nationalising lithium so that it cannot be exploited by foreigners – be they from Russia, China, or the United States,” he said.
“The oil and lithium belong to the nation, to the people of Mexico, to you, to all those who live in this region of Sonora, to all Mexicans.”

Who’s got news out?
A major reverse circulation lithium drill program has kicked off at St George’s Mt Alexander Project in WA, testing numerous pegmatites mapped across a 15km long pegmatite corridor for the first time.
This expanded program builds upon the maiden campaign undertaken in late 2022 at the
Jailbreak prospect, which is now delivering the first batch of assays.
The focus, SGQ says, is to investigate if these pegmatites potentially merge at deeper levels or are otherwise associated with a larger pegmatite body down-dip.
Anson has identified a significant opportunity to reduce carbon emissions at its Paradox Lithium Project in Utah, USA following the results from a hydro power energy recovery study.
Study results indicate up to 7MW of ‘green energy’ may be generated during brine extraction and transportation to lithium extraction plant via the addition of small scale hydro energy plants.
According to ASN, up to 4MW of power may be generated from each of the brine recovery wells at surface while another 3MW of power may be generated at the lithium extraction plant.
Anson will conduct further studies and technologies to meet its goal of producing lithium with low carbon emissions to the standards of potential offtake partners and OEM’s.
Burley has received the necessary exploration permits to begin pad clearing and drilling at the Chubb Lithium Project.
Immediate focus will be on drill testing the extensions of known spodumene mineralisation at the project site located within the Abitibi Lithium Hub district of Southwest Quebec.
Burley says the drilling program is designed to confirm, expand and extend spodumene lithium mineralisation, confirmed over the last two years of initial diamond core drilling.
The Chubb Lithium Project is located in the heart of the world-class lithium province of Quebec, Canada, which hosts major lithium projects including Sayona and Piedmont Lithium’s North American Lithium (NAL) mine.
Historical records have confirmed the Trident Lithium Project hosts lithium-rich LCT-Type fractionated pegmatites that are highly anomalous in lithium-caesium-tantalum and rubidium.
Similar to the early-stage exploration at Core Lithium’s Finniss Lithium Project, historical lithium exploration is very limited and there has been no previous drilling into the main lithium bearing pegmatites within the Trident project.
Given these results, SLB CEO Colin Skidmore says the company is looking forward to start working on this “exciting” project.
Auroch has completed phase 1 reverse circulation drilling targeting lithium-caesium-tantalum LCT pegmatites at the Kangaroo Hill Lithium Project (KHLP) in WA.
A total of fourteen holes were drilled for 3,440m, successfully identifying pegmatite lithologies in 12 of them.
Auroch has now commenced a target generative geophysical review of the greater project area and a ground based seismic and resistivity survey will be trialled to assess the overall effectiveness in defining pegmatite’s below cover and at depth.
