You would think that a parrot with nocturnal habits would have good night vision, but in the case of Australia’s elusive night parrot, you would also be dead wrong.

Turns out that the endangered night parrot — just one of only two nocturnal parrot species in the world — actually has pretty bad eyesight, according to a 3D reconstruction of the bird’s skull by Flinders University researchers.

The poor resolution of the night parrot’s eyesight is particularly perplexing considering that it has retained its ability to fly while the other nocturnal parrot, New Zealand’s large Kakapo that shares its poor eyesight, is flightless, reported the ABC.

A University of Queensland PhD candidate says the new finding could explain why other nocturnal birds like owls can fly around trees but the night parrot lives in open plains.

Immuron (ASX:IMC) +219%

Coming out second on the list of top gainers this week is Immuron, which revealed this week that its research partner had requested a pre-investigational new drug (IND) application meeting with the FDA for Immuron’s oral immunotherapeutics.

The US Naval Medical Research Center is keen to proceed with phase two trials of the company’s drug, which prevents acute infectious diarrhoea, during the first half of 2021.

Beston Global Food Company (ASX:BFC) +100%

Shares in the company soared after it announced the sale of its dairy farms in Mount Gambier, South Australia to Aurora Dairies for $40.4m in cash.

The deal will give Beston the rights to 100 per cent of the dairy supply from those farms for a 10-year period, while also reducing debt and freeing up capital to expand the company’s operations in mozzarella and lactoferrin production.
