Rise and Shine: Everything you need to know before the ASX opens

Good morning everyone and welcome to Rise and Shine on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Here’s what you should know before the ASX opens today…

At 7am AEST Tuesday, ASX futures were up 0.31%, hinting at a decent start to the day.

Here’s what happened last night…

Wall Street recovers, especially tech

We could say something trite here, such as “what a difference a day makes” … but we’d never do that.

Wall Street has mopped up a fair bit of its blood from Friday and has a decent spring in step again, with the S&P 500 rising 1.58%, the Nasdaq +2.20%, and the Dow +1.33%.

The BBOO (Big Bloated Orange One, aka Trump) seems in a TACO kinda mood, dialling down his trade-war bluster, sending chipmakers and tech names flying back up again.

Broadcom led the charge, rocketing 10% on news it’s teaming up with OpenAI to crank out the chatbot maker’s first home-grown AI chips. That lit a fire under the rest of the sector – the Philly chip index jumped nearly 5%, while Nvidia and Micron joined in the rally.

STOCK INDICES Value Change
ASX 200 8,883 -0.84%
S&P 500 6,656 1.58%
Dow Jones 46,084 1.33%
Nasdaq Comp 22,693 2.20%
Russell 2000 2,461 2.77%
Euro Stoxx 50 5,568 0.67%
UK FTSE 9,443 0.16%
German DAX 24,388 0.60%
French CAC 7,934 0.21%

What’s next insofar as catalysts go, then? It’s a bit hard for forecasters to … cast, when there’s no data available thanks to the ongoing US government shutdown. That said, traders are now turning to bank earnings, with JPMorgan, Goldman, Citi and Wells Fargo set to report amid the government data freeze.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, the ceasefire appears real, with Hamas freeing the last living Israeli hostages from Gaza and Israel sending home Palestinian detainees as part of a deal pushed by Trump.

He might now be considering making his own “Peace Prize”. (Accordian hands) “Who was this Nobel guy anyway? This new prize will probably be the greatest prize anyone has ever seen,” he’s thinking to himself. (Probably. Almost certainly.)
