Lunchtime small cap wrap: who’s hooning and who’s crashing
News
Here are the key ASX small cap winners and losers at lunchtime Friday June 8.
The ASX Small Ords was down 2 points at 2,856.8 by 1.15pm AEST — though still near a seven-year high.
GOING UP
Investors are piling in to Latitude (ASX:LCD) after mining identity Klaus Eckhof’s daughter Kim yesterday moved to join the lithium play’s board.
The stock was up 17 per cent to 3.5c today.
Perhaps investors were moving out of dad’s AVZ Minerals (ASX:AVZ) which dropped from 13c to 9c yesterday after Klaus sold down a large tranche of shares.
AVZ fans were moving back in today, however — the shares were back up 5 per cent to 10c by 1.30pm AEST.
Latitude, which was previously focused on gold, will ask shareholders to vote on Ms Eckhof’s appointment at a June 18 general meeting.
Kim Eckhof’s appointment comes after Latitude struck a deal to acquire a 70 per cent interest in the Mbeta lithium project located in southern Zimbabwe.
Latitude chairman Tim Moore told Stockhead yesterday Ms Eckhof’s far reaching connections would come in handy for a small player like Latitude.
Breast cancer detector and blockchain wannabe Genetic Technologies (ASX:GTG) gained 22 per cent to 1.1c after formalising a deal with an Indian start-up that wants to build a blockchain-based health network called Project Shivom.
Project Shivom, launched last October in northern India, has the ambitious plan of “growing to be the largest genomic and health data-hub on the planet“.
The venture is said to have raised $US35 million ahead of a planned worldwide launch this year.
The terms of the deal were “confidential” but included sharing of Indian population data and “access to Indian hospitals and patients and assisting in promoting and marketing GTG’s risk assessment tests on the Shivom platform”.
Project Shivom would pay GTG $US200,000 under the deal to fund research and product development.
Oil explorer Melbana Energy (ASX:MAY) moved ahead 18 per cent to 1.3c after offshore survey specialist Polarcus signed on to undertake a 3D survey for its Beehive project in waters off northern Australia.
Beehive — one of the biggest undrilled hydrocarbon structures in Australia — is operated under an agreement with energy company Santos and French major Total.
The survey is expected to run from July to August.
Another oil play Norwest Energy (ASX:NWE) rose after Singapore-based private oil play Tamarind Resources became a substantial shareholder earlier this week. Tamarind now holds 290 million shares after buying on-market.
The shares were up 33 per cent to 0.4c today.
“We see Tamarind’s new substantial shareholder status as a strong sign of confidence in our projects and in the potential for the Perth Basin,” Norwest’s CEO Shelley Robertson said.
Tamarind boss Ian Angell said: “Tamarind has a strategic view of the tremendous opportunity in the Perth Basin and consistent with our involvement in Cliff Head and Triangle Energy, we view the investment in Norwest as a great way to participate in the potential of the Perth Basin.”
ReadCloud (ASX:RCL) shares hit a new high of 45c, up 6 per cent , as investors continued to react positively to a recent presentation outlining the company’s growth prospects.

GOING DOWN
Cannabis play Stemcell United (ASX:SCU) fell back today after yesterday’s big jump following the granting of a cannabis licence to its China partner Yunnan Hua Fang Industrial Hemp (HFIH).
The shares gained 65 per cent yesterday — but dropped 17 per cent to 2.9c in early Friday trade.
SCU has the right to acquire up to 51 per cent of HFIH for about $760,000.
The licence allows HFIH to plant, process and sell industrial hemp products in China.
HFIH can access cannabis seeds which SCU can use for stem cell research as it works to establish itself as a supplier of Chinese medicine cosmetic cannabis products.
