Lunchtime ASX small cap wrap: Who’s ringing the bell today?
News
News
This sounds crazy, but sometimes you can’t deny Wall Street is more exciting than Bridge Street.
One reason is the bell-ringing ceremony every opening and closing at the NYSE. In recent weeks, companies such as Spotify, Uber and Beyond Meat rang the bell, and overnight it was Slack’s turn.
The messaging app listed at US$26 and ended at US$38.92. While the investors will be happy, there’s no doubt what the highlight of the day was, the moment Salck debuted.

Up there was CEO Stewart Butterfield, some employees and… Stewart’s mother Norma.
You might wonder, isn’t the NASDAQ the home of tech companies? Certainly for the FAANG stocks it is. But with the string of IPOs listing on the NYSE, perhaps the latter is about to take the mantle back.
Slack, it has 10 million users and 95,000 paying users. Butterfield reckons work emails as we know them will be gone in seven years. Perhaps investors think he’s right; only Facebook and Alibaba had higher opening trade sizes. (Slack’s was US$1.7 billion.)
Our markets may not have Slack but the ASX has been in America this week to try to ensure we don’t completely miss out on the latest US tech boom.
Regardless, the ASX Small Ords is finishing on a good week on another high. It gained another 10 points (or 0.36 per cent) to be 2908. It’s up 3 per cent this week and nearly 6 per cent since the rate cut.
There wasn’t a lot of news causing upward action this morning.
Arafura Resources (ASX: ARU) bounced back up after falling yesterday when it announced a capital raise. It’s up 20 per cent.
Some companies rose from news earlier in the week. Legacy Iron Ore (ASX: LCY) announced drilling was under way and Global Vanadium (ASX: GLV) secured a loan extension.

It has not been a happy return for reinstated Oakajee (ASX: OKJ). After being suspended since September 2016 and coming back one week before end of financial year, it was a seller’s market this morning.
