Lunchtime ASX small cap wrap: Who wishes they hadn’t bred labradoodles today?

How could anyone possibly think labradoodles are anything but cute? Well, the very person who bred the first labradoodle thinks they’re actually more like a monster.

Wally Conron wanted to combine the suitability of labradors as a guide dog with the non-shedding nature of poodles for someone who was blind and allergic to dogs. So cross-breeding the two was what he did.

But thirty years on from his experiment Conron has said,”I opened a Pandora’s box and released a Frankenstein’s monster.”

Our markets are flat today. The ASX Small Ords is up 0.15 per cent to 2,917 points while the ASX 200 is down 0.04 per cent to 6,747 points.

After a sharp drop last week, ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence was more steady, gaining 0.7 per cent. ANZ senior economist Felicity Emmett noted this was still below the long run average and it would encourage another rate cut next week.

“Consumers seem impervious to both fiscal and monetary stimulus and the combination of weak wage growth and high levels of debt may prove to be the more dominant driver of confidence and spending,” she said.

Going up

Genetic Technologies (ASX:GTG) gained 20 per cent after announcing a possible life line through a capital raising. The rise came despite the departure of its executive chairman.

Scandium miner Platina Resources (ASX:PGM) jumped 14 per cent. It signed an MoU with metals supply chain management firm Traxys to advance its NSW project
