ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Who’s breaking away today?
News
The big end of town lacked direction this morning in the wake of a steady session on global markets, with the ASX200 trading flat.
But things were more buoyant among the small caps, where the ASX Emerging Companies Index posted a gain of ~1.75 per cent — on track for its best session since August 14.
On the COVID-19 front, NSW reported seven new cases (four in quarantine), while Victoria had 42 new cases and no deaths as Premier Daniel Andrews flagged an easing of restrictions in regional areas.
And on the ‘it looks like the world is getting dangerously hot’ front, there was sobering news from both poles starting at the north end (Arctic), where satellite imagery revealed that a 110sqkm glacier had broken off from Greenland’s ice shelf.
Down south (Antarctic), new imagery shows two huge glaciers are starting to break free from the natural barriers that hold them in.
That’s got scientists jumpy, with the survival of one glacier in particular (Thwaites) deemed crucial to prevent a material rise in ocean sea levels.
In other markets, the Aussie dollar has climbed back above US73c, while US-dollar gold is well supported above $US1,963 an ounce.

Energy and resources led the way, as Jupiter Energy (ASX:JPR) and Redbank Copper (ASX:RCP) both led out from the opening bell and held their gains into midday trade.
Jupiter, which rose from <1c to 34c in April for no apparent reason (then fell almost as fast), tripled to 7.4c today on the back of an operations update.
The company said wells at its Akkar East oilfield in Kazakhstan had returned to production, now the company has obtained the relevant regulatory approvals.
Redbank ripped higher after rejoining the ASX boards with a revised capital structure, after being in voluntary suspension since August last year.
