• ASX earnings continues today as Stockhead reports highlights 
  • Discretionary and Tech sectors led the ASX
  • Australia’s jobless rate rose to 3.7%

 

ASX earnings dominated the headlines on Thursday, as some of the biggest names reported their half yearlies.

At the close of the day, the benchmark ASX 200 index was up 0.8%.

Here’s a selection of today’s earnings results:

National Australia Bank (ASX:NAB)

NAB rose 3% after reporting a $2.05 billion statutory profit in Q1 Fy23, with cash earnings increasing by 18.7% vs pcp.

Net interest margin (NIM) rose by 12 basis points to 1.79%.

“The higher interest rate environment, resulting from central bank actions to curb inflation, has benefitted our revenue this period,” said NAB CEO, Ross McEwan.

Telstra (ASX:TLS)

Telstra reported a 26% lift in H1 profit to $934 million, beating consensus estimates.

EBITDA increased by 11.4% to $3.9 billion, driven by “momentum from the mobiles business and support from the acquisition of Digicel Pacific”.

Sonic Healthcare (ASX: SHL)

Sonic rose 4% despite H1 revenue falling 14% to $4.1 billion, and net profit falling 54% to $382 million.

Sonic’s CEO, Dr Colin Goldschmidt, said: “At face value, Sonic Healthcare’s result for the half-year shows declining revenue and earnings as a result of a dramatic reduction in revenue from COVID-19 related services against the same period in the prior year.

“Taking a longer-term view, our net profit for the half-year is an amazing 50% higher than in the most recent pre-pandemic comparable period, being H1 FY 2020.

Sonic declared a 5% increase in interim dividend to 42¢, fully franked.

Whitehaven Coal (ASX:WHC)

Whitehaven’s H1 profit surged to $1.78 billion from $340.5 million.

This comes off a top line revenue of $3.8 billion, with achieved coal price of $552 a tonne versus unit cost of $96 a tonne.

Whitehaven has forecast a full year mine coal production of between 19Mt ~20.4Mt , and a cost of coal of between $95t ~ $102t.

Origin Energy (ASX:ORG)

Origin says its full year EBITDA from energy markets will be at the top end of its range of between $600m ~ $730m.

The company says the guidance is on an underlying basis, and excludes the coal price cap.

For the half, Origin made a statutory profit of $399m vs a loss of $131m in the pcp.

Magellan (ASX:MFG)

The struggling funds manager  reported a 60% drop in interim net profit from $293.7m to $98.3m for the half.

This came as funds under management (FUM) fell from $112.7 million to $53.8 million.

The company declared an interim dividend of 46.9c, which  is 85% franked.

Meanwhile, Australia’s unemployment rose to 3.7% in January from 3.5% in the previous month according to ABS data today.

Underemployment, which measures those who are currently employed but wish to work more, remained at 6.1%.

On the ASX, the Utilities sector underpeformed while all Discreationary and Tech sectors rose by more than 2% each.

Can and bottle maker Orora (ASX:ORA) jumped 14% after posting an 8% improvement in NPAT to $108m.

Block Inc (ASX:SQ2) rose 9% on no specific news.
