Crypto juggernaut FTX has signed on as the naming rights sponsor of Australian Blockchain Week, in the latest sign of international crypto exchanges paying to get their names before an Aussie audience.

Financial details of the arrangement weren’t disclosed but Blockchain Australia chief executive Steve Vallas called the announcement “massive” and said it came at a watershed moment for the Aussie blockchain ecosystem.

“Last year the Australian Blockchain industry reached a critical milestone and we believe the mainstream moment has now arrived,” Vallas said.

“Growing interest in blockchain technology from major financial institutions together with signs of increasing regulation for the industry mean this year’s event is being held at a critical time for all players in this market.”

FTX chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried will be one of the 200 speakers at Blockchain Week, along with more familiar names from the local scene.

The free multi-city event will run from March 21-25, with more than 75 online, in-person and hybrid events in six cities.

“Australia has a vibrant and innovative crypto and Blockchain industry and we are very proud to be the naming sponsor for Blockchain Week,” Bankman-Fried said.

“With our focus on supporting the long-term growth of the Australian market, we look forward to contributing to discussions to advance the local industry, better safeguard and protect consumers, and enabling financial institutions to evolve and thrive in the crypto industry.”

The deal comes just a day after Singaporean crypto exchange Crypto.com agreed to pay $25 million to sponsor the Australian Football Men’s and Women’s Leagues, in one of the biggest sponsorships ever in Australian sport.
