US share markets weakened overnight as negotiations to avert another government shutdown abruptly fell apart over the weekend, Commsec says.
Investors are also awaiting data on inflation later in the week, and news on crucial US-China trade talks.
In contrast, Australian markets (which have a tendency to follow the US up or down) have opened strongly.
The ASX Small Ords – the benchmark for small cap stocks – was up 0.41 per cent to 2681.4 by midday.

WINNERS
Emerge Gaming (ASX:EM1) was up 57 per cent before being placed in a trading halt pending an announcement “clarifying a media article in relation to the company”.
Small cap explorer High Grade Metals (ASX:HGM) has lost its chief exec and managing director – and the market loves it, sending the stock up over 22 per cent.
And Red Sky Energy (ASX:ROG), which is looking acquire Beach Energy’s interests in the Innamincka Dome oil & gas project, was up 100 per cent on no news.

Bougainville Copper (ASX:BOC) reported some jurisdictional dramas in the Solomon Island province yesterday, and its stock has fallen 12 per cent in response.
Siburan Resources (ASX:SBU) and Arc Exploration (ASX:ARX) were also down 50 per cent and 16 per cent respectively on no news.
